Reach your hand to the sky-
grab hold a fistful of the wind-
and listen.
Listen for the sands
rasp in the blow.
The roiling oceans,
an avalanche, wild.
Listen for the deep, deep,
green of primordial growth,
of animal pace and roam,
an owl’s silent flight.
Listen for the murmerings-
aeons of words
compressed in the air,
their weight holding
you fast to the ground.
Listen behind the breeze
and you may find
that moment of life.
Breath breaking its newness
and snapping the darkness
like a spark-
flint fresh and bright.
Listen.
The cry.
It’s there.
To capture a world,
to breathe creation’s
oldest breath.
In flesh.
In coming.
That infant wail
shook the heavens-upended time-
can be heard.
But only if you reach.
And listen.

Susan Mulder finds herself on a journey to find peace with herself and in the world. Writing poetry is a way she challenges herself after laying down her previous career/s to pursue God’s path for her future. With a terminal degree in fine art in painting, she has held several positions in what she calls her ‘old life’. Though Mulder continues to paint and exhibit and is the author of a poetry collection, No Ordinary Time, she finds her deepest expression (and joy) in writing and within the eyes of her grandchildren.
