This poem is about locating our hope, which is found in Christ. Our only hope in this life and the life to come is in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Because of His merits, we have the Father’s love and the access to fill His throne room with our prayers. It is in Christ that we are made right with a holy, holy, holy God. We are not perfect, nor will we ever be in this world, but Christ’s perfect righteousness is our perfect righteousness. When God’s gaze falls upon us, He sees His Son. Our righteousness is in heaven at the right hand of the Father.
Tokens
Hope descended in Spirit cloaked in clay
Jettison a glory to bear my shame
Exchanging royalty for Adam’s rags
On earth, Your birth has dawned a Hallowed day
Accessing a portal where sheer love came
Removing a weight, I’ll no longer drag.
You have expressed the inexpressible
With perceived sermons of signs and wonders
Reshaping the shape of my shattered soul
Accepting You, I’ll be acceptable
But, on my own, for You, I won’t hunger
I need Your broken body to be whole.
A King’s blood, planted in a garden of grief
Poised to be drained dry for those who thirst
Nature views the leafing of redemption
A life of oblation is Your motif
Blessed hands to lift us up from the curse
And to bathe us in beauty’s reflection.
Tethered to the cross, His throne of glory
The torn flesh of wineskin, spilling life
Body and blood for our spiritual health
A sacramental view that tells God’s story
Of a relenting love that ends all strife
These are the tokens of the death of death
